The headlines And most notably, a major development from the Republican campaign trail in the US. It_s now official - Newt Gingrich will be dropping out of the race for the White House. And yes, Mr. Gingrich is expected to wave the white flag in a formal announcement next Tuesday. The fact that he lasted as long as he did in the Republican battle is a surprise to most pundits. But it wasn_t without a steep price. The Gingrich campaign is now 4-point-3 million dollars in debt. His campaign scored a big victory early on with a win in South Carolina. But he failed to win other Southern states and it became increasingly obvious that he couldn_t challenge Mitt Romney_s candidacy. Whether he_ll choose to throw his support behind Romney_s White House bid remains unknown.Elsewhere in the US, Connecticut has become the fifth state in as many years to choose life over death. On Wednesday, Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy signed new legislation that abolishes capital punishment. The new law will take effect immediately. That means the maximum sentence in state trials will be life in prison. However, the law isn_t retroactive, and won_t change circumstances for prisoners already facing the death penalty. Connecticut is the seventeenth state in the US to abandon capital punishment. Side, long There are shocking allegations out of Los Angeles international airport. 4 security screeners have been arrested on drug trafficking and bribery charges. According to a prosecutor, the Transportation Security Administration staffers - both past and present - accepted 22 payments of up to 24-hundred dollars each in order to allow large shipments of cocaine, pot, and meth through x-ray screening machines. Some of the shipments weighed up to 44 pounds. This is being described as a significant breakdown of the screening system. EIla, along with the TSA employees, several other people have been charged as being drug mules. EA) This is a huge black eye for an organization that_s not exactly popular to begin with, isn_t it?VS) It sure is. They_re patting down and strip-searching elderly women, but for a few dollars they_ll help you smuggle all the drugs you want.EA) (shakes head) This is the last thing they needed, PR-wise.
