I_m Victoria Sinclair, welcome to Naked News. All eyes are on the Gaza strip, where the ceasefire agreed to on Wednesday between Israel and Hamas appears to be holding. Optimism is rising for this short-term solution in the hopes that it will yield longer- term results. During the early hours of the truce, there were reports of rockets fired into Israel from Gaza, although the Israelis did not retaliate. However Israeli security forces arrested 55 alleged terror operatives overnight. But that_s far from the only development in the Middle East we_re following for you. In Syria, rebel forces have taken control of a key military base in the country_s eastern region. Katherine Curtis has been tracking the ongoing struggle there, and joins us now with the latest. Kat?Vic, the rebels have seized an important army base in the eastern town of Mayadeen. The base is said to contain large artillery stockpiles and other military supplies. It was also thought to be the last stronghold of government loyalists in the oil-rich eastern province. Meanwhile, government forces carried out airstrikes on a suburban area near the Syrian capital of Damascus, as well as rebel bases in the north. Activists say 40-thousand lives have been claimed by the violence there since protests began last year. Lastly, here_s something straight out of the TV series ëLost.i A South Pacific island called Sandy, nestled between Australia and New Caledonia, has long appeared on most world maps including Google Earth. But researchers from the University of Sydney have just made a rather startling, uh, un-discovery. It turns out Sandy doesn_t actually EXIST. Never has, never will. Sounds impossible in the satellite age we live in, but the so-called existence of this phantom island is being chalked up to simple human error being repeated over the years. Funny but true Vic. What a bizarre development. So cartographers everywhere have just been taking this faulty information at face value all this time?It would seem so.
