Description:
We hope you_ve been managing to stay warm out there, because 2014 is off to a VERY chilly start Especially for our friends in the midwestern and eastern US. They_re experiencing the coldest temperatures they_ve seen in decades The deep freeze across the midwest is being called life-threatening by officials. Icy conditions have caused thousands of flight cancellations, and schools in Chicago and all over Minnesota have been closed as a safety precaution. In some parts, temperatures are dipping to their lowest point in two decades. Heavy winds from an arctic cold front mean temps will fall to sixty degrees below zero If there_s a bright side to all this nasty weather, it_s that it won_t last very long. The frosty weather pattern is expected to move east, and temps should get back to seasonal norms by the end of the week. Republican Senator Rand Paul has intensified the debate over NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Paul says Snowden should be given a light punishment for his role in exposing state secrets, rather than facing a long prison sentence. Paul_s comments come a few days after a controversial New York Times editorial, which claimed Snowden had done the country a great service, and deserved a plea deal from US prosecutors.US Secretary of State John Kerry says he_ll do quote everything that is possible to help Iraqi authorities deal with Al-Qaeda forces. Everything, that is, except sending American troops back to Iraq. Al-Qaeda_s numbers in the western province of Anbar are growing, and they_ve already taken control of the region_s two largest cities. Kerry says the Obama administration is keeping a close eye on the fighting there, and plans to be in close contact with all Iraqi political leaders. The US is also dealing with a rising Al-Qaeda threat in Syria, and Washington could turn to an unlikely ally for help: Iran. The terrorist group is an enemy to both Washington and Tehran. Improved relations could see the two join forces to battle instability in the region. As a gesture of good faith, the US now says it is open to having Iran play a role in the upcoming Syrian peace talks in Geneva. John Kerry doesn_t want Tehran to have a formal part in the negotiations, but thinks they could quote contribute from the sidelines.
