The foul-smelling blue-green algae has covered their water and stormed beaches in 4 counties. And believe it or not it_s a man made disaster. The algae bloom is the result of controlled discharges from the polluted Lake Okeechobee. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers has explained that the environmental impact of releasing the lake water has to be balanced against the potential flooding and public safety hazard of NOT releasing it.
