More on that in a sec, but first, it_s been no easy day for Matt Bissonnette. He_s the ex-Navy SEAL who wrote the tell-all about the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.I can_t say I read it, but I know a lot of people did. It was a bestseller - and the US government wasn_t very happy about it.Not at all They took him to task and it looks like he won_t make a single penny from his story. Here_s what_s going on. Welcome to the newsroom everyone. In 2012, former SEAL Team 6 member Matt Bissonette released the bestseller No Easy Day using the pen name Mark Owen. The firsthand account of the daring raid that killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden became an instant bestseller. Thing is, Bissonnette never got clearance from the Pentagon before publishing it He_s now had to forfeit nearly 7 million dollars in book royalties and speaking fees to the government for violating non-disclosure agreements. Bissonette apologized for the book, saying he received poor advice from his lawyer and never intended to endanger any of his former colleagues. With the settlement reached, the government will dismiss other liability claims against him. One of the web_s most infamous websites will soon be no more. Gawker.com will shut down for good this week. The news comes a few days after its parent company, Gawker Media, was bought in a bankruptcy action by Univision for 135 million dollars. The Gawker Media umbrella includes a handful of other popular sites, including Deadspin, Gizmodo, and Jezebel. Those blogs will continue business as usual, but Gawker will be shuttered. Founded 14 years ago by CEO Nick Denton, Gawker became the go-to source for gossip stories on celebs and high-powered business leaders. But its willingness to go after public figures ended up costing Gawker dearly. After losing a 140 million dollar privacy lawsuit to Hulk Hogan, the company was forced to file for bankruptcy. And the battle for one of the world_s biggest media empires is over. Sumner Redstone has been awarded ownership of Viacom, the media company he started that owns MTV, Comedy Central, Paramount Pictures, and Nickelodeon to name only a few. Now 93 years old, Redstone and his daughter became embroiled in soap-opera-like fight for control of the 40 billion dollar company against a group of his colleagues at Viacom. They questioned whether he had the mental capacity to lead the business. The legal wrangling took a toll on the company, with Viacom_s earnings dropping 29 percent in the first quarter. With the fight over, Viacom chief executive Philippe Dauman will exit the company, along with a cushy 72 million dollar severance package. Redstone is one of the greatest media moguls we_ve ever seen, Kat, but his health is a major concern. It looks like it won_t be long before his daughter Shari takes the helm.Hey it must be nice.
