So who would you say topped the winner_s list?Well there were plenty of big moments in the 3 hour telecast but one film FLEW high above the rest Birdman came out on top at the 87th Academy Awards Sunday night. The jazzy black comedy cleaned up in the major categories winning Best Picture Best Director Best Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay. Quite a haul During his acceptance speech Mexican director Alejandro Inarritu urged Americans to treat immigrants with the same dignity and respect as those who came before them. Many people thought Birdman star Michael Keaton would go home with the award for Best Actor but no that honor went to Eddie Redmayne for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.Meanwhile Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress for her part in Boyhood. The movie was considered a frontrunner heading into the night but only managed to win one of its six nominations. Arquette made it count by delivering a rousing speech about equality for women in the workplace. Not EVERYTHING was political and heavy handed. Host Neil Patrick Harris did his best to keep the mood light and put his trademark musical talents on display. He also didn_t shy away from taking a few jabs at Hollywood.If we learned anything Sunday night it was that box office success does NOT necessarily translate into luck at the Oscars. Despite making more than 400 million dollars and being nominated in six categories Clint Eastwood_s American Sniper didn_t win ANY awards. Birdman on the other hand will go down as one of the lowest-grossing Oscar winners of all time. All right now let_s take a look at some of the news making headlines today. That includes details on an expanding oil refinery strike in the US. Here is Angie Heyward with a Naked News bulletin.Katherine the strike by the United Steelworkers union has expanded to more refineries over the weekend. In all the union represents 30000 workers at 65 refineries nationwide producing roughly two-thirds of all oil in the US. So this is a significant strike with the potential to get a lost worse. They blame the oil industry for failing to address safety issues through good-faith bargaining. Shell Oil Corporation is leading the negotiations and says they are extremely disappointed with the latest development. Expect to see higher prices at the pump as the strike continues. Officials have regained control of a South Texas prison that had been the site of a massive riot. Inmates set fires and caused significant damage to parts of the Willacy County Correctional Center. The unrest began on Friday when prisoners refused to report for breakfast or work activities in response to poor treatment at the prison_s medical center. Only a few people suffered minor injuries in the riot but MAJOR damage was done to the facility. HUNDREDS of convicts had to be relocated to other prisons while authorities assess the damage. And Americans from Minnesota to Texas are bracing for yet another brutal blast of arctic air. Parts of North Dakota and Minnesota saw wind chills drop to minus-40 on Sunday as the nasty weather system works its way south. Chicago and Boston will see wind chills of twenty below. And if you_re out on the roads in the Dallas-Fort Worth area be careful out there They got hit with 2 inches of sleet and large parts of the Longhorn state are covered in ice If there_s a silver lining to all this nasty weather it_s that it should ease up towards the end of the week I_m Angie Heyward.
